Forty-five albums, sixty-eight years, an uncountable number of songs written, and Bob Dylan is still just blowing in the wind. Dylan has often been compared to a poet who writes his odes to music, and recently, people have begun to talk about him as a was – he was the singer/songwriter of his generation. He was revolutionary. He was a genius.
With ‘Together Through Life,’ Dylan’s forthcoming forty-sixth album, he has done something truly revolutionary: lit a match to the banners proclaiming his reign as our protest, poet king at an end. ‘Together Through Life’ makes Dylan relevant to our times, an artist who, at sixty-eight, still has a lot of interesting things to say. It is also his most interesting record since 1997’s ‘Time Out of Mind.’
This is also a Dylan we haven’t heard from nearly enough – many of the tracks are wry, sometimes comic slices of American life, where heartbreak, struggle, laughter, and beauty always come together. “Highlands” manages to be both epic and playful, while “If You Ever Go to Houston” will have you up and grooving before you know what’s happened.
