Components of Running Shoes

Posted by: Reader | Comments (0)

Running shoes are the integral types of shoes for anyone who runs regularly. These types of shoes prevent injuries and they also make the running gait more comfortable and easier. With the increasing popularity of running shoes, many manufacturers have launched different styles and designs of running shoes. Thus, the market if running shoes is very big and has emerged as a huge investment for manufacturers into the technology and science of running shoes.

Different components of a running shoe include;

The outsole:
It is the treaded layer on the undersurface of the shoe made up of carbon rubber or similar material. The design protects the foot from any kind of wears and provides traction on softer surfaces.

The midsole:
Being the most important part of running shoes, it provides a cushion and stability layer to the shoe. It is manufactured by using ethylene vinyl acetate (EVA), polyurethane (PU) or a combination of the two. The midsole also help in limiting pronation of the foot. Different manufacturers have developed different methodologies to design midsoles of running shoes.

The upper:
The upper wraps around and over the top of the foot. This portion can be made up of leather or any synthetic material depending on its lightness and breathable. The upper should be designed such a way to give a cushion the top of the foot against any kind of pressure from the laces. The upper also prevent rubbing and irritation against the foot.

The heel counter:
It is inflexible cup that is usually placed surrounding the heels. It is firm enough to control motion of the rearfoot.

Post or footbridge:
Being a firm material in the midsole, post or footbridge increases stability of the running shoe.

Tips for Getting Comfortable Shoes

Posted by: Reader | Comments (0)

There is nothing worse than wearing an uncomfortable pair of shoes. Yesterday’s woman suffered the agony of cramped feet forced into unnatural walking positions for the sake of fashion. The comfort and ergonomic attributes of sports shoes are gradually creeping into dressy and office shoes. Flats with the bottom made of one flexible piece are in: rigid soles are out. It’s like marrying a dress shoe with a sneaker. The sole is decorated by patterns of swirls; indentations and ridges that provide safe grip on slippery floors and give a cushioning effect. But today’s woman doesn’t have time to stagger along on stiletto heels any more; she is demanding fashionable shoes that are comfortable and take her quickly through her day. And shoe manufacturers are listening at long last.

Shoes are undergoing a fashion revolution led by Prada.

Heels are getting lower – without looking like granny shoes – and toes are getting wider. No more blisters and bunions! The inside of the shoe is also changing to provide comfort and a healthy environment for feet to live in. Stretchy fabrics, cushioned straps, and cushioning layers of memory foam all make shoes a delight to wear. It’s about time too. Attractive shoes that don’t cripple our feet have been needed for a long time.

Running Tips: Women’s Running Shoes

Posted by: Reader | Comments (0)

Running is a great choice for women looking for an exercise program. Women make greater gains in their times and conditioning compared with men, and it’s a great way to lose weight after a pregnancy. Running requires little money and is flexible (you don’t have to schedule a class). But there are some things women need to be aware of when running, for it’s a rigorous sport and can take its toll over time if done carelessly.

Several reports indicate that knee injuries in particular are more common among women than among men. The reasons given have to do with leg alignment, muscle strength, and joint laxity or looseness. In general, women have wider pelvises than men do, which makes for a corresponding larger quadriceps angle, meaning the hips come down to the knees at a sharper angle. This puts more stress on the kness, making them more vulnerable to injury. Sports physicians often refer to a condition common in women called “”the terrible triad”", in which a wider pelvis causes legs to be more knock-kneed.

The name stability creates some confusion as a category of shoes alongside the motion-control category because motion-control shoes are the most stable but provide a bit more cushioning than motion-control shoes do. Cushioning refers to the softness of the midsole. A softer midsole will absorb the force of impact better than a firmer midsole will; it also allows more foot motion.

Stability shoes are usually built on a semicurved last, which allows more foot motion than a straight last does. Several models, however, contain a medial post or an area of dense midsole material along the inner side of the shoe to prevent too much motion.

Cushioned shoes have the softest midsoles and provide the best shock absorption. Sounds ideal for any runner, doesn’t it? Cushioning is not for everyone, though. This is partly due to the softness of the midsole, but in addition, cushioned shoes are built on a semi-curved or curved last and most do not contain motion-control devices, allowing your foot to roll inward. Clearly, these are not the shoes for overpronators.

The shoe should have about a thumbs’ width of space more than the full size of the feet. The middle foot area should have a secure and comfortable resting place beneath it. Also, be sure to try on both shoes. On many people one foot is usually bigger than the other foot. Inside the shoe is a stiffened cup encasing the toes known as the box, or block? The place over the toe is called the vamp, the opening near the toes is called the throat of the shoe.

There’s a favorite choice for women’s running shoes over the years that is Saucony. With designs that apparently were favorable with female runners. Saucony shoes are noted to have narrow designs and defined heels. Other shoe manufacturers also have their own line of women’s running shoe, such as New Balance and Nike.

Buying Comfortable Shoes

Posted by: Reader | Comments (0)

Most of us like shoes that look good. However, should this be at the risk of comfort and injury? There are many styles of shoes that not only look good but also they feel good. It is not necessary to give up one for the other.

What To Look For

When trying shoes on wiggle the toes to check for freedom of movement.
If you notice any discomfort try a larger size because the pain will only get worse. Remember to check the sole for flexibility by bending the shoe. If the sole is rigid and does not move with you, this could be a prescription for latter discomfort resulting in painful feet.

Walking Shoes

If you are standing on your feet all day then shoe comfort can really a big issue.
Feet will spread more when standing than sitting. Arch support and adequate toe room are very important. You can easily check support by placing your hand inside the shoe and checking for padding in vital areas like the heel, balls of the feet and arches.

Shoe Widths

When it comes to shoes, there is no such thing as one size fits all.
Depending on the breadth of your feet, you can buy the same size shoe in wider or narrower widths. Women’s’ widths run from AA (narrow) to EE (extra wide). Parallel sizes for men are BB (narrow) to EEEE (extra wide).

Flat feet

If you have flat feet then proper arch support is necessary to avoid foot pain. The better shoemakers will include some form of arch support. If additional support is desired then these may also be purchased in the form of partial or full sole inserts for added comfort.

Shoe Insoles

Like a car shoes have shock absorbers to prevent your feet from feeling the total impact of the bumps in the road. Full size insoles with proper cushioning will protect multiple pressure points and reduce injuries.

Diabetic Shoes

Preventing ulceration of the feet due to excessive rubbing of the shoes can become a major concern if you have diabetes. Because of loss of sensation in the extremities, a diabetic may be unaware of blisters on the feet. Custom fitted shoes may be the best solution if over the counter products are not working.

Swelling Feet

If your feet tend to swell, then you may want to consider buying shoes a size larger to reduce any discomfort and tightness after feet have swollen.
Walking In Your Shoes
When trying on new pair of shoes do not forget walk around the shoe store to get a sense of how they will feel once purchased.

Shoe Materials

Shoe materials like suede and leather provide not only more flexibility but comfort because the material is able to conform to the shape of the foot and exert less resistance in sensitive areas.

Uncomfortable Shoes

Narrow toed and high-heeled shoes if worned to excess can eventually cause injuries to the ankles, calves, toes, back and knees. High-heeled shoes have been known to distribute weight unevenly causing extra pressure on the ball and front of the foot. Conditions such as hammertoes and bunions have been directly attributed to these kinds of shoes. Many podiatrists recommend shoes with a maximum height of no more than 1inch for maximum comfort.

Finally

Feet are one of our most precious possessions. Take care of them and they will serve you well for many years to come. Abuse them and pay the price.

Nike Running Shoes 2010

Posted by: Reader | Comments (0)

Nike is always busy with not two but four new footwear launches every year. However this Spring/Summer range has to be the most exciting and innovative for years.

Heading the innovation are the Free and Lunar range of shoes. You can’t pick up a magazine or read a blog without finding a reference to ‘barefoot running’ so it comes as no surprise that Nike has chosen to make this a big focus in 2010. In addition to this the phenomenal success of the Lunar range has encouraged Nike to introduce three new models.

The Golden Oldies

The Nike Zoom Vomero+ 5 has been made even more comfortable. A new extended crash pad, Zoom Air in the heel and forefoot, plus full length Cushlon make it one of the softest rides around and ideal for the heavier neutral runner.

The Nike Air Pegasus+ 27 has been revved up with a more responsive Cushlon (ST) lower profile, full length midsole and deeper Flex groves in the forefoot. Also sporting the No-Sew upper the Nike Air Pegasus+ 27 no longer looks dated and is ready to continue its fight to remain on of the worlds most popular running shoe.

Although the feel of the Nike Air Zoom Structure Triax+ 13 underfoot will remain the same. The upper has received a dramatic make-over. A light weight, open mesh Breathe upper, honeycomb collar and perforated sock liner have been added to provide the maximum amount of breathability. So if you are an over-pronator with sweaty feet you should definitely be taking a look at the Nike Air Zoom Structure Triax+ 13.

The Young Guns

The Nike Lunarglide+ remains the same, however it has inspired the expansion of the range.

The Nike LunaRacer+ 2 could possibly be the racing flat of the year. Not only does it have the look you want when lining up on the starting line it backs it up with fantastic performance. The ever impressive LunarLite cushioning provides an incredible amount of shock absorption given its weight and  Flywire on the upper gives you even more lightweight support and comfort.

However the Nike LunarElite+ is the shoe that has captured the attention of the office. The initial colorway leaves a lot to be desired but the performance doesn’t. Featuring the Dynamic Support that is behind the hugely successful Nike LunarGlide+ the Nike LunarElite+ adapts to every stride to provide you with as much, or as little, support as you need throughout your run.  Ultra-light, ultra-strong Flywire on the upper helps lock your foot down, and the LunarLite cushioning system in the midsole delivers ultra-plush cushioning and springy response. The Nike LunarElite+ should hopefully prove to be the ideal running shoe for everyday training and tempo runs.

Designed to sit between the Nike Lunar and Nike Free range is the Nike LunarLite.  Featuring the Nike Free last that provides anatomical fit and the Wedged carrier construction as the Nike Lunarglide+ to offer runner-specific dynamic support. The Nike LunarLite appears to offer the best of both worlds.

Back to Basics

The Nike Free product models updated for Spring 2010 appear to be geared directly at runners versus the general sporting goods population that several of the Free models from previous seasons look like they were intended for. Ironically they seem to be more engineered which seems to defeat the purpose of simulating barefoot running however only time will tell.

Closet Organizers Save Space

Posted by: Reader | Comments (0)

When people think about organizing their lives to save time, they rarely think that their closet – the smallest room in the house – is one of the most important rooms to have well-organized. But common sense says it is.

That’s because the closet contains some of your most valuable possessions – your clothing!

Look in your closet right now. What do you see? Are there piles of old clothes on the floor? Are they burying something important? Do you have boxes stacked precariously on a single high shelf, ready to come tumbling down at the slightest touch? Do you spend several precious morning minutes trying to find something to wear?

Then you need to organize your closet. And it’s easier than ever to do that, because there are dozens of closet organizers on the market, so you’re sure to be able to find something to fit your price range.

What kind of closet organizer do you need, to fit your lifestyle?

Shelving systems
Wire rack shelving systems are perhaps the quickest and easiest kind of unit to install. They are light, but sturdy, and you can see what’s on the bottom! This type of system most typically is installed at the top of the closet, with the clothes hanging below, and is used for boxes and other large items.

If you want a more elegant look to those shelves, you can find complete systems made out of such hardwoods as maple…and if you are looking for sturdy but utilitarian you can even get shelving made out of steel.

Shoes
It’s possible to obtain a shoe bag that you hang around a door knob, but some people think that looks tacky. You can also get tilted shelves so that you can lay out your shoes for easy viewing.

Hanging Units
If you’ve got long coats and short coats, long dresses and short dresses, then you may sometimes find yourself wishing that you had a way of compensating for those differences. Well, all you need to do is acquire an adjustable hanging unit or two, or even a “valet pole.”

Drawers
As with anything else, you can find a drawer system to suit your pocketbook, from wire to plastic to metal to wood.

Of course, once you have an organization system in place in your closet, the trick is to use it! It does take a little bit of discipline to train yourself – or your children – to put things back where they came from, to put things away “now” so you don’t have to spend 20 minutes cleaning up all those “I’ll do this later” things, later.

Once you’ve got the system, however, the cleanup is easier, so you’ll soon be able to get into the habit of keeping one of your most important living spaces neat and tidy.

I can’t tell you how many years I either suffered through uncomfortable heel wearing or stopped wearing heels altogether because I thought the term “high heels” was synonymous with pain.  Generally it is.

Then one day, while researching online, I discovered some shoe inserts that actually alleviate the pain inherent in wearing alluring footwear.  I was skeptical, because I really hate hurting feet and figured it was my lot in life, but on impulse I bought some and let me tell you, my fashion style has never been the same since – I actually have some now!

My insert of choice are Foot Petals products.  They’re very low profile so they don’t make your shoes uncomfortably tight, but they do keep your foot in place, and that’s the bottom line of why most high heels hurt to begin with.  All that pressure on the ball of your foot and with your heel placed higher, the ball of the foot tends to slide forward, which in turn squishes your toes in the front of the shoe.  No good!

So for ball-of-foot pain avoidance, I put Foot Petals TipToes in all my high heels.  They’re a really light foamy material that stick to the insole of your shoe.  You’ll only notice they’re there because your feet won’t hurt!  It’s quite amazing how such a small idea can be downright ingenious.

Then my other most favorite product are Foot Petals Heavenly Heelz.  Small foam strips that you stick on in the inside back of your shoe, these clever babies can serve two purposes.  First of all, they’ll keep your heel from sliding or blistering at the back of the shoe (who hasn’t dealt with that from time to time?) but second of all, if you’ve ever bought a pair of shoes and brought them home only to realize they were slightly too large but were too lazy to return them, Heavenly Heelz can take care of that for you. That cushioning they provide will help fit the shoe better to your foot, so it’s win-win all ’round.

So don’t accept uncomfortable heels, make them wearable again with these two little products, you’ll be high-heeling your way to happiness and looking hot doing it.

If your feet hurt come on over to Wide Shoes For Women for a great selection of shoes and foot/shoe products, many with free shipping.

Taking Care of Your Running Shoes

Posted by: Reader | Comments (0)

Look after your shoes and they look after you, a maxim every runner should remember. A well-kept pair of shoes will provide much more comfort and support for a longer amount of time than a neglected pair. Although most modern running shoes are made of durable, impervious fabric and need very little care, if you follow all these dos and don’ts, you will get the maximum mileage out of them.

Don’t put your shoes through the washing machine unless you absolutely have to do, as it is far too intense and experience to do them any good

Do wash with mild detergent and lukewarm water.

Do wash or clean as soon as possible after your run.

Do dry by filling with scrunched up newspaper and leaving them in an airy space, after you have removed the insoles.

Don’t use your running shoes any other sport — especially football.

Do remove dried on mud with suede brush or a soft dry scrubbing brush.

Don’t leave them to dry on a radiator, as they will try to quickly and the intense heat will damage the midsole.

Do store away from bright sunlight and out of any extreme cold. Don’t leave them on the porch or in the garden all year round.

Do have more than one pair. Each will last longer than they would by themselves as you will have more chance to care for them properly in between runs

Do stick with what you know. If you are satisfied with a particular model buy it again and again. If you see it on sale, buy more than one pair, as it seems companies make it their business to discontinue the shoe just as you’ve grown to love it.
