Carpet Runners

Carpet runners are long, narrow strips of carpet used in constricted spaces such as hallways and staircases. These are often found in the form of rugs, although are also available purely as strips of carpet. For houses with long, slim halls with hardwood flooring, carpet runners are ideal for bringing much needed warmth and style.

Outfitting an entire room with a fitted carpet can be very costly, especially if a hardwood floor is being replaced. By using a carpet runner the most often walked part of the floor can be covered at a fraction of the cost, enhancing comfort and instantly renovating the space. Due to the removable nature of the runners they are also easily changed or replaced without causing disruption to the entire room.

Stair Carpet Runners

Stair carpet runners are also available, these are similar to standard carpet runners except that they lack the backing used for normal carpet flooring. Stair carpets are often held in place using stair rods, which can also bring a touch of extra style.

Advantages of carpet runners

Safety

Uncarpeted flooring and stairs can be slippery or uneven; this can cause all kinds of accidents around the house. Carpet runners provide grip and help smooth over any bumpiness in hardwood flooring, providing added safety. As a side note, it is always best to hire a professional to fit stair carpet runners if you are not certain of how to proceed yourself. Unevenly fitted runners could cause someone to trip and thus are especially dangerous on stairways.

Manageability

Fully fixed carpets can be difficult to clean, and expensive to replace. By using carpet runners in hallways and stairs any accidental spillages or mud walked in by pets (or children!) can be easily cleaned; quickly and cheaply. Also, should any damage come to the carpet – or in the case that it is worn out through use – it can simply be replaced, avoiding any disruption. The very fact that a carpet runner is being worn down also means that it is protecting the flooring beneath it.

Noise

Hardwood floors are renowned for being noisy, whether they are being walked on by someone in shoes, or run across by excited children. Carpet runners enable you to reduce this noise hugely by cushioning the sound, with the biggest benefit been seen by stairways.

Style

Both carpet runners and stair carpet runners are perfect opportunities for enhancing or refreshing the interior design of your home. Given the wide range of styles, colours and textures available you are almost spoilt for choice when deciding how best to outfit your floor. The best part is that if you are redecorating or simply want a quick, cheap way to transform your hallway or stairs, you merely need to change your carpet runner design.

For a great selection of carpet runners view the of Brockway Vogue collection website. The Vogue ranges contain stunning examples of plain and of striped carpets working together in brilliant effect.

Caring For Your Binoculars

Posted by: Reader | Comments (0)

Going to a horserace? Perhaps you are going to trapse around the wild in search of our ornithological friends (birdwatching)? Then you will be needed a good pair of binoculars. After you have purchased them, you will not get much use from them if you do not take proper care of your binoculars. An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure and this adage holds true whether its changing the oil in your car at regular intervals or performing maintenance on your binoculars.

The first rule of proper binocular care is the same rule for doctors when they take the Hippocratic Oath which is first, Do No Harm. Your binoculars will not work very well for very long if you are constantly dropping them or mistreating them. Binoculars are a sensitive piece of ocular equipment and while they may seem sturdy, any repeated physical blow can cause the lenses to misalign and to blur the image.

So now that we are making sure that we are avoiding overt physical damage, we need to focus on proper cleaning. Maintaining the lenses is will be our main focus from now on. But in order to care for the lens properly one must make sure that it is free from dirt and debris. If the lens is dirty it will not focus properly and will issue a distorted image. So, to keep the lens clean we must clean it with the proper materials.

The materials needed to clean your binoculars are a proper cloth and the correct cleaning solution.

One should NEVER use ordinary cloth to clean the lenses of binoculars. Even if the cloth feels smooth to your skin, it has rough fibers that will damage the lenses by leaving scratches and other marks on the surface. The type of cloth you should use is a microfiber cloth. Microfiber cloth wins out because it is thinner than regular cloth, streaks less and is generally more gentle on the coating of the lens ( the coating on the lens is important as it prevents unfocused light from bouncing around inside the binoculars).

In order to protect the coating you must also use the correct cleaner when performing maintenance. Use an ordinary cleaner and you will damage the coating and permanently blur the lenses. This is because the coating on the lenses contains a chemical that can negatively react to an improper cleaning solvent.

One additionally factor to consider is that of moisture getting inside the binocular. Water is corrosive and can contain tiny bits of particulate which can accumulate inside the optic when water gets in and dries out. Therefore, if the binocular is to be used in an area which has high humidity, the best way to go is to buy a pair that is waterproof.

These are some of the things you need to consider when caring for our binoculars. If you maintain them properly, they will richly reward you for years to come.

Mountain Biking Is Very Popular

Posted by: Reader | Comments (0)

Regular bikes compared to mountain bikes may have a smoother ride and are slower and heavier but are great for riding on the street. You can find information about mountain biking online or in magazines; they are geared toward beginners or professionals. Mountain biking is not really thought of as exercising but it is a great way to burn many calories.

If your interested are off-road you will need bike that can handle the terrain so you will need some big treads and a good suspension to handle the bumps and holes so get a good mountain bike, if you are just riding for fun then a regular bike will do. There are so many different styles of mountain bikes so when you are looking to purchase one make sure it fits the terrain you will be taking it on and make sure it fits your riding style. If you are going to be rough on your bike and plan on going through gravel, dirt and jumping off hills you definitely need a mountain bike.

The chassis on a mountain bike is sometimes referred to as the skeleton, this is a term that refers to the fork, frame and suspension and is looked at as one unit. Mountain bikes are equipped with knobby tires, large number of gears and handle bars that are wider; they also include shocks and a much stronger suspension. You can choose from many different suspensions on your bike, make sure the suspension you choose is going to fit the type of cycling you intend for it. These used to be the most common kind of mountain bike but they are rapidly being replaced by the more comfortable models which feature some sort of suspension system. They have had front suspension on bikes for a while now; the rear suspensions have just come into the market place, it took longer because of all of the design complexities.

Of course, there are many other things to consider when purchasing a mountain bike, but for the beginner, it’s best to just narrow it down to how much you want to spend and what kind of suspension you’re going to want.

If you want to ride your mountain bikes look for trails that are suited for mountain bikes. If you don’t have any trails or jumps, you can build them.

When you first try the toe clip style of pedal you might want to spend some time getting use to it, it will take some practice. Getting a feel for your pedals while first sitting on your bike, keep one foot on the ground and practice moving your foot away from the pedal.

If you have clip less foot pedals or toe clips, you will want to practice this quite a bit. Turn your bike upside down, move the pedals and shift gears. The pedals can also use a regular application of lubricant.

The purchase of your helmet should be at least as important as buying your bike. About 90 percent of the people riding can reduce head trauma just by wearing a helmet. Cost shouldn’t be a factor as a good helmet can be acquired for around $25-$45.

The modern sofa is one of the most important furniture that every house needs. Whether you’re in the suburbs or in the middle of a bustling metro, the contemporary design of this furniture is fitting and versatile enough for any home. To help you find the right sofa furniture you need for your space, here are some helpful considerations.

Types and styles

The modern sofa is not limited in terms of style. You’ll likely find one available in many different designs. This often creates confusion among shoppers, especially if they haven’t planned the shopping beforehand. What you might want to do first is to know what type of sofa you want.

There are a lot of sofa types to choose from. If you want a multi-purpose, space-saver, there are sofabeds. You can even choose a loveseat modern sofa if you’re worried about the size of your space. Fortunately, these types of furniture are available in different sizes as well, making them versatile enough to fit either a small or a large space.

Another sofa type you might want to consider is the sectional sofa. This type of sofa is starting to become a staple for modern homes due to their contemporary appeal. There are sectional sofas that you can rearrange depending on your preference. If you want to maximize the space you have, consider choosing the sectional sofa for better functionality.

Upholstery

The upholstery is another important consideration when buying the sofa. Generally, the two most popular types of upholstery are fabric and leather. Fabric is more consumer-friendly because of its cost. Maintaining fabric is also easy since you can opt to purchase a slipcover for your sofa to protect it from dirt and stains. You can even choose microfiber to avoid any allergic reactions.

Leather, on the other hand, is more durable. With careful maintenance, you can bet the leather of your modern sofa to last for years. However, leather tends to cost more than fabric. They also often demand a lot of attention in terms of maintenance. You have to make sure that you are fully equipped with the right tools to clean your leather sofa. Basically, though, you can protect the leather upholstery by making sure that stains and spills are wiped off immediately. Also, rotating the sofa will be tremendously helpful in distributing wear and tear evenly. Nevertheless, leather is among the most attractive upholstery for any sofa.

The installation of water fountains for beautification of indoors and outside goes back a very long time in history. Their evidences can still be seen in the old royal buildings and palaces of the kings and queens across the globe. They appear in different size and shapes, some specifically carved out by designers on unique stones with styles and statuettes celebrated in their era.

Water fountains are more than just mere materials of beautification. Water itself is known to heal so many human diseases and ailments.

Many urban homes today possess a fountain, be it a table top or a wall fountain in the indoors, or a garden fountain in the outdoors. It offers an ultimate backdrop draw when you are hosting functions or in conversation with company. It provides a dazzling scenic back-drop in your indoors if installed in the best place with the precise lighting and area.

Today as decor in your home retailers are more and more becoming well-known, even wall water fountains are being modified to all shapes and sizes to suit in nearly all places and surroundings. They are available in numerous materials from stone or ceramic to glass or slate, even plastic. Some of the more expensive pieces are themselves rare artifacts that add a classy look to your home when installed in the right place among right surroundings. They are available in numerous looks from the current to the sophisticated and sometimes even the rustic appearance. You can go for the best one that suits your furnishings and suits your spending budget. They are a piece of cake on installation and do not need much maintenance except (blank) on the water amount and flow regularly and cleaning every several weeks.

When going to buy water fountains for your home keep the following things in mind so as to choose the right one:

* Size – There is a huge selection of different sizes of water fountains in the marketplace. But you should be certain about the size you want. Study the place and surroundings of the place where you are likely to add a water fountain. Determine the type and size of the fountain that will be ideal to the surroundings.

Take the weight of the water fountain into account while choosing your version. You should not pick out a model that you will not be able to use because of its hefty weight.

* Location – The water fountain can also depend on the kind of site that you want to set up it in. It can range from a table top fountain or a wall fountain for the indoors to a huge garden fountain for the outdoors.

So be aware of all of these points before you decide on the right water fountain in your household.

Fixed die modular bindidng punches are designed for users who have outgrown a combo binding machine but don’t need the ability to punch muliple hole patterns. These punches are designed for higher volumes of punching and for use with a stand alone finsher. Here are some simple directions for using a modular comb punch.

Prior to punching your document, determine the number of holes required for the document (depends on the side of the document that is to be bound – 11″ edge requires 19 holes – 8 1/2″ edge requires 15 holes).

1. Deselect the Die Pins you do not want to punch by lifting the Selector Pin Lid and pulling the pins up.

2. Set the Depth-of-Punch Lever (on the left side of the punch) to either under or over 9/16″. This refers to the diameter of the comb element being used. Plastic binding is the only bind style that uses this measure, and its main purpose is to adjust the margin from the edge of the paper to the holes being punched so the element is properly filled. If the margin is punched too deep into the paper for a small element (i.e. 1/4″), the pages will not open or turn easily because there is not enough room inside the element. Conversely, if the margin is punched too shallow for a large document (i.e. 1/2″), the pages could tear out if the document was roughly handled or dropped.

3. Using a test lift of paper (or covers if using oversize covers), insert the sheets into the Punch Throat, moving them until they are flush against the Edge Guide and all the way into the bottom of the Punch Throat. Hold the sheets in place with one hand.

4. To punch, press the Punch Button or Foot Pedal.

5. Now, take one sheet of the punched material and fold it in half to check for hole alignment. If it is squared you’re ready to continue punching the document.

6. When the punching is complete, remember to lift the front lid up, remove the chip tray, and trash the debris.

Note: As mentioned earlier, Comb Binding frequently uses oversize covers. This simply means the covers are manufactured 11-1/4″ X 8-3/4″ (instead of 11″ x 8-1/2″), leaving an 1/8th inch margin at the top and bottom of the document and a 1/4″ excess margin on the unbound 11″ side of the document. This is to prevent dog-earing of the material contained within the covers of the document. It also makes the document look neater, as the pages do not stick out when the element moves in the punched holes. This does not happen with our other bind styles, as the holes are smaller, and there is less movement of the binding element.

What this means to you, is that the Edge Guide must be reset to “center” the holes of the oversize cover. Follow the same steps for setting the Edge Guide and checking the setting that you just completed. If you were punching a number of documents using oversize covers, you would set the Edge Guide for the paper, punching all the paper – then set the Edge Guide for the covers and punch all the covers.

Both Wire Binding and Coil Binding are set up using steps 1 through 5 – since the covers are flush cut with the paper (no oversize), there is no need to reset the Edge Guide.

Solar Hot Water Heating

Posted by: Reader | Comments (0)

Solar hot water benefits

One of the most energy intensive (and therefore costly) processes in any house is the heating of water. Heating water accounts for more than 20% of residential energy use in the USA and around 40% of energy used in Australian homes.

This represents not only a massive chunk of your power bill, but also a substantial proportion of carbon dioxide emissions. A solar hot water system, over a period of time, will save you money and lessen your environmental impact.

Solar hot water equipment types

There’s two main types of solar hot water systems

Passive: A passive system consists of a tank for hot water storage, a solar collector, piping and frame. The entire system is mounted on the roof. Water heated by the panel flows upward naturally and then is gravity fed into the house.

Active: An electric pump is used to circulate the fluid through the panel collector, meaning that the tank does not need to be on the roof. The advantages of an active system include:

a) can be easier to get local government approval
b) less weight and strain on the roof
c) doesn’t require major roof modifications
d) more aesthetically pleasing design

Solar collectors

The solar collector is the business end of a system, heating the water and many advancements have been made in solar collector technology in recent years to improve performance. The most common types of solar collectors:

Flat plate

A flat plate collector is the traditional type and consists of an insulated box containing a black sheet of metal with embedded pipes. The heat is absorbed by the sheet and transferred to the water in the pipes.

Evacuated Tube

An evacuated (or vacuum) tube collector consists of glass tubes with a layer of heat absorbent coating through which water pipes run. As the tubes encasing the water pipes are a vacuum, this reduces heat loss; making them more efficient than flat plate collectors; so these are particularly suited to colder climates. While evacuated tube systems are a little more expensive than flat plate, their increased efficiency (up to 97% thermal energy retention) more than makes up for the added cost.

Heat pumps

Heat pumps are a form of solar hot water technology that don’t use any sort of collector. Heat pumps use heat in the air to raise water temperature – even in freezing conditions down to -10 Celsius (14F). A heat pump is like a refrigerator, but in reverse. I’ve spoken to a few people who have these units, and even in the depths of winter they’ve had no problems with a steady supply of hot water.
